Day 10: Lucky Plaza and Changi Village

We stumbled out of the hotel and made our way to Lucky Plaza food court for breakfast. It was Sunday, ergo, we were in a sea of Filipina maids gathered in their favorite "day off" hot spot. My tummy was only able to handle kaya toast again. As I ate, I pondered how all the Singaporean parents were home with their children, wondering why the kids are speaking Tagalog, and praying for Monday, when the maid comes back to work.
Ever since I hit Orchard Road, I had been dying to try an ice cream sandwich from one of the old dudes who pedals his refrigerated cart, and sets up shop on the sidewalk. Alas, my tummy has some cootie from hell. HOWEVER, another super gracious local offered us her beach chalet in Changi Village, and, while I didn't think I was ready for it, we stopped along the road for ice cream sandwiches! Talk about being literal. A big, thick slice of ice cream plopped into a piece of sweet bread. Quite tasty and cute, if I do say. A 'must try' in Singapore, but I still like the chocolaty sandwich ones I had as a child better.

After "checking in" and getting the run down of the beach chalet from our gracious host, we headed out to venture the surrounding area. The local enquired about bicycle rentals as the price apparently goes up when asked by Ang Mohs. While waiting, a plate of Nasi Lemak was ordered and it was meal time again. This was from the famous Nasi Lemak store in the Changi Village hawker center. Nasi Lemak is a malay dish that has coconut flavored rice, fried crispy chicken wing, otak otak, fried anchovies, fried egg, cucumber and spicy sambal. To go with the Nasi Lemak, we ordered carrot cake. We had the white version earlier but this is the black version which is fried with dark sweet soy sauce. Oh how I wish I could've enjoyed it fully, but even so! Even with cootie filled stomach, the otak otak was fantastic. It was worth waking up at 3am to sit on the john in a pool of sweat (I say, 14 hours later.)
